I didn't want to post those tix on my blog, but I did it because my SIL was exerting serious pressure on us to GO and buy the tix from her but instead I told her I'd try to help her unload them.

Ah well. I got that German sentence wrong.

One of the most common errors in writing German is this sentence:

"Halt oder ich schiesse!", which means "Halt or I'll shoot!" Too often, though, beginning German students transpose the "i" and the "e" and write this: "Halt oder ich scheisse!" which means "Halt or I'll shit!"

I suppose, depending on which end of the gun you're on, both are correct.

Boy, I hate it when I blow a punch line!Janet Kincaidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01396294382570650966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14395763.post-88945362204683721682007-07-26T07:16:00.000-04:002007-07-26T07:16:00.000-04:00And, of course, every editor's worst nightmare mis...And, of course, every editor's worst nightmare misspelling is the word 'public.'

You'd be amazed how many times that one shows up incorrectly in articles! Of course, the first time you see it, you snicker like a seventh grader. Subsequent appearances begin to make you wonder where the writer's mind was.

Some of my favorite misspellings are to be found in German. This is a classic:

'Er shiess den Mann' = 'He shot the man' often is transposed by beginning writers of German as 'Er sheiss den Mann' which equals 'He shit the man.'

Common mistake, very different meanings!

Ah, writing.
