Day 20: Chicken and Waffles

Today's blog is inspired by DCFud, who wrote about Oohhs & Aahhs Restaurant on U Street. Apparently, O&A serves chicken and waffles.

Chicken and waffles? you ask incredulously. Chicken and waffles?!

Hey, don't knock it 'til you've tried it. I'm here to tell you, fried chicken and waffles is one fine culinary combination. The juxtaposition of savory and sweet is unsurpassed. If you like maple syrup on your bacon when you have waffles and bacon, this is just as good!

Case in point: one of my favorite restaurants in California is Roscoe's House of Chicken 'n Waffles. There use to be one in Oakland, but it shut its doors several years ago. If you want a fix of Roscoe's now, you have to go to Pasadena for the taste of southern fried chicken and secret recipe waffles that will leave you feeling like you've died and gone to heaven.

In addition to Oohhs & Aahhs in D.C., there's also Gladys Knight & Ron Winan's Chicken & Waffles up in Largo, MD. Had no idea she had a restaurant in this area; haven't been there, but I might have to check it out. I'll certainly be visiting Oohhs & Aahhs.

And now I'm hungry...

Lizzie: Welcome! I just checked out your profile and blog and learned that you moved here from SoCal. ARE YOU FREAKIN' NUTS?!? Okay, okay. Just kidding. I know we've only just met, but as someone who left a great life in San Francisco and moved here for a job, I'm just wondering why others do it. And I keep wondering why I did it....

Anyway--glad to know there's another Roscoe's fan out there. I also forgot to mention the Waffle House over near Ford's Theater. Haven't been there yet and its being threatened with gentrification, but I'm hoping to get over there in the next week or so. Maybe they'll have chicken and waffles on their menu, too. How divine would that be?

That sounds like a strange combination, but then again I like marmalade on toast with cheese on top, so perhaps it does work!

I've heard of this, but never experienced it... I guess I'll have to give it a whirl, soon.

Ms. U: Marmalade on toast with cheese. Hm. Same concept, though, I think. The marmalade is sweet, the cheese is savory. The combination is divine. Same thing going on here with chicken and waffles. I may have to try your combo. Any suggestions on marmalades? We have mostly Robertson's brand on this side of the pond.

SML: It's really, really good! You should try it sometime. The next time you go to your favorite diner, order fried chicken and a side of waffles with maple syrup. So yummy. And so darn healthy for you, too. Not.

GF: It's a pretty odd, but amazing combo that works. I was in Pasadena this summer and took a very skeptical friend who became a total convert and wanted to go again before I left!
